Baby Slings: What to Look For

our days are pretty busy when you’re a mom, and it can seem impossible to get anything done when you have a baby that wants to always be held by you. While it’s important to sit and enjoy those baby snuggles as long as you can, you still have daily chores that need to get done. You may even have other children that require your care. A baby sling is a great way to keep your baby close to you while still remaining mobile around the house. But what do you look for in a baby sling? Let’s talk about the basics.

Type of Carrier

There are different styles of slings that you can take into consideration. A more structured sling with a built-in frame is beneficial for older kids who weight a bit more. Slings that act as a hammock are often comfortable for newborns, but make sure that there is adequate air flow inside of it. You can find backpack slings that place baby on your back. Front-wearing slings are nice if you want access to your baby at all times.

Size and Weight

Baby slings come in many different styles and sizes. Some are made just for the newborn time frame, while others can grow with your child well into the toddler years. If you want something that is affordable and will last for a long time, look for a sling that starts out at a low weight range and goes all the way up to 25 pounds or so. You may also want to look for a sling that provides different positions. Small babies should face you, while older children can face outwards.

Comfort for Baby and Mom

It’s important that the sling you choose is comfortable to wear. You don’t want it to be digging into your shoulders or back the wrong way. This could leave you in a lot of pain at the end of the day. The sling should also be comfortable for your child. Make sure that they have enough room around the leg and arm holes. Plenty of padding for both baby and mom will ensure you’re both comfortable during the baby wearing experience.

Getting the Carrier On

Depending on the type of baby sling that you have, there are different methods for putting these items on. Some require you to place the sling on your body first before putting baby inside. Others will instruct you situate the sling around the baby, and then carefully attach the carrier to your body. Just be sure to read the instructions fully before beginning this process to ensure the safety of the baby.

How to Care for Your Sling

Babies can be messy with the leaky diapers and spit up that they produce. It’s inevitable that your sling is going to get messy here and there, so check the care instructions before making a purchase. You’ll benefit from a sling that is machine washable. At bare minimum, you will want to spot treat the sling as needed. You should also keep fabric type in mind depending on where you live. If you’re going to be wearing the sling in the hot summer months, a breathable fabric is going to be a lot more comfortable than something which is very padded and heavy.

Baby slings and carriers vary in price quite a bit. You can get designer brand names, but these products aren’t always worth the investment. It’s better to look for something that is providing you with all of the different features and options that you want. Don’t think twice about spending a few extra dollars on a product that will be ultra safe and comfortable.

A baby sling is an item that absolutely should be put on your must-have list. It’s a great way to remain mobile while still bonding with your baby. Not to mention, you’ll give you arms a break for a bit. Close physical contact with your baby can help them develop a close bond with you, while stimulating them in ways that will boost their development.
