Cribsheets: What to Look For

There’s such a long list of items that you need to invest in when you’re trying to prepare for the arrival of a new baby. It can be daunting to learn all that you can about every single one of these items. Setting up a crib ahead of baby’s arrival is important, even if you plan on having your baby sleep in a bassinet near your bed for the first few months. You still want to make sure that you have all the items that you need for when they make their transition to their crib. What should you look for in a crib sheet? There are many different materials to choose from, and you may not know what to take into consideration.

Sizing for Crib Sheets
Most rectangular cribs require the same size mattress, so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about the size of the crib sheet you’re buying. They tend to be pretty standard. You just want to make sure that you’re not buying a sheet for a travel pack ‘n play crib. That’s a much smaller design that you won’t be able to use for your regular crib. Otherwise, stick to the standard sheet that is approximately 52” long and 27” wide.

Different materials exist for crib sheets, and what you choose depends on a number of factors. You may want to buy a few different sheets to be used during different times of the year. In the summer months, there are thinner and cooler fabrics that will prevent your baby from overheating while they sleep. Winter months benefit from something heavier that will keep the mattress area warm.

Jersey Material
Jersey is also called t-shirt material, and it’s a very practical material for crib sheets and other beds. While it’s a very thin material that can stay cool in the summer, it’s soft enough that is stays quite warm in the winter. The only downside is that jersey sheets tend to come in solid colors. If you’re looking for something that has a cute print on it, you may need to opt for a different material.

Organic Cotton
Organic cotton is extremely soft, but you also don’t have to worry about any potential chemicals being used during the production of the sheet. Pay close attention to the reviews that are posted for a specific organic cotton crib sheet that you’re considering. Unfortunately, not all of these products are created equal. While most organic cotton is soft, you’ll find a cheaper brand here or there that has a much rougher texture to it.

Mattress Topper
Underneath your sheet and on top of your crib mattress, you can invest in a mattress topper. This is essentially the same thing that you would buy for your own bed, but it’s designed to be breathable and safe for babies. Make sure you choose something that fits the crib mattress properly. You don’t want it to be bunchy underneath the sheet.

Flannel
Flannel is a beautiful fabric that is super soft on your baby’s skin. If you want to be able to use a flannel crib sheet all year, try to find one that has a low pile and is more on the thin side. Then you’re really just using a really soft sheet versus something that’s heavy and made for winter. They make some really adorable flannel sheets for babies with cute patterns on them.

There’s plenty of places that you can go to look for a crib sheet. Major retail stores like Target, Walmart and Pottery Barn carry crib sheets, but you can also look online. There are plenty of websites that provide you with various options for your baby’s new room. You can even find entire crib bedding sets that come with a matching crib skirt, sheet, blanket, etc. You’ll really need to determine what your budget is, and that will determine where you can shop and how many sheets you can invest in. Just make sure that you have at least one or two extras. Babies spit up and have diaper blowouts, and you don’t want to be dealing with a dirty crib sheet in the middle of the night with nothing to replace it with for the time being.
